Hurricane Preparation: Tip #2

Now that you’ve decided where to go (or whether to stay), you should prepare your survival kit. Don’t wait until there’s a hurricane watch - by them items may be in short supply or sold out, and prices may be higher. Now that hurricane season has started, stock up. Think of food and beverage to sustain your family for 3-5 days. Plan for things that don’t need refrigeration. You may have a gas barbecue you can use, but that won’t help if you’re confined inside.

Here are some items to consider:

Bottled water, sodas, juices.  You can even get coffee in cans that heat themselves when activated!
Canned good: tunafish, dried beef, fruits.
Jars: peanut butter, jelly.
Crackers, flat breads.

Be sure to bring a manual canopener since there won’t be electricity. A Swiss Army knife is always useful, too.

Paper plates, plastic cups, plastic utensils, paper towels.

Look for creative ideas in the stores: vacuum packs that don’t need refrigeration. Boxed milk.

Bring some fun things, too, like chocolates. Think gourmet picnic.

If you’re going to friends, be sure to bring things to share. It can wind up an eclectic menu.
