A peek in the window at 400 Beach – St Petersburg Florida
October 21st, 2008 categories: 400 Beach, Downtown St Petersburg, Places to Eat
An early morning glimpse of work beginning in the space at the northeast corner of 400 Beach in downtown St Petersburg. It’s almost like Santa’s workshop – there are no signs. A drafting table with plans is set up in the unfinished space and pipes are being laid. It must be the beginning of 400 Beach Seafood and Tap House, the new restaurant being developed by Steve Westphal of Parkshore Grill fame.
Scheduled to open on February 15th, 2009, this seafood companion to Parkshore Grill should be an instant success with the same ownership and management, the same sidewalk dining across from the park and Vinoy yacht basin.

Go Rays! On to the World Series.

Tropicana Field glowed as I drove by this morning on my pre-dawn trip to the Vinoy Fitness Center. Usually when the Rays win a baseball game, the fabric roof is illuminated in Tropicana orange. Never before, though, have I seen it still glowing in the morning – but never before have the Rays made it to the World Series. All of St Petersburg was celebrating the win! Go Rays! Coffee at Kahwa’s
October 9th, 2008 categories: Downtown St Petersburg
This morning I indulged my newfound habit and stopped for a latte at Kahwa’s (after having coffee at the Vinoy with my workout friends) and met Jean Thibault, another one of the owners of Kahwa Coffee in downtown St Petersburg. The only owner I haven’t yet met is Catherine Thibault, so I’ll wander over one afternoon and try to meet her. There are several regulars there at 8 am, including a group from the Palladium Theater, as well as the owner of a new business coming to town.
So, come check out this French coffee bistro (tables inside and out) at the corner of 5th Avenue N and 2nd Street N. And remember to tell them – Sharon Simms sent you!
p.s. If anyone wants to practice their French, this is a good place to do it.

Too Jays leaves Baywalk
October 7th, 2008 categories: Downtown St Petersburg
This morning TooJay’s Deli at Baywalk in downtown St Petersburg held a meeting to tell their employees that they were closing their doors, effective immediately. Most of the furniture has already been moved, and the sign is down. Too Jay’s is still planning to open new locations, but this one wasn’t generating enough income.
