Sample ASPEC during the summer in St Petersburg

The Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College (ASPEC) is offering a chance to sample its offerings, hoping the sample will whet your appetite to join the organization. ASPEC is a group of interesting people who share their broad life experiences and continue to share and learn with each other. From current events to opera, from computers to foreign languages, from tai chi to building a dragon boat, from bridge to chess, from visual arts to drama and writing workshops, there’s a broad variety of interest groups. Monthly restaurant visits, holiday parties by the water and weekly socials are other opportunities to meet each other and have fun.

People have moved to St Pete just to participate in ASPEC (some famous, some not). The summer offerings are fewer than in the busy winter season, but the smaller number of attendees gives you a better change to get to know them.

You can “sample” two weeks at ASPEC for only $100. Call (727) 864-8834 for more information and be sure to tell them that Sharon Simms sent you!

ASPEC attracts residents to St Petersburg

ASPEC attracts residents to St Petersburg. The Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College offers involvement, community, continuous learning and fun. Many members come because they know other people here, some have read about it, some just happen on it.

ASPEC has over 40 different interest groups, most of which meet weekly. Topics cover the arts, literature, business, science, languages, politics, performing arts, photography, computers, culture and lifestyle. These groups are led by members and everyone contributes.

ASPEC has lots of fun, too, from weekly social hours to monthly dinners out, from lunches to trips to area museums and theater presentations, from card games to waterfront sailing, from foreign films to holiday events. Some ASPEC members are famous, others are not. The common denominator to me is that these are interesting people who have led interesting lives and they are willing to share.

What’s going on in St Pete?

ASPEC has many activities going on at their Eckerd  College Campus. One of the dozens of activity groups is Applied Technology – a favorite for the men who gave up their workshops when they moved to Florida.  The Island Reporter has a good article on page 3 about this ASPEC group in their current edition. They built an airplane and a boat  and are now doing projects for some of the nonprofits.

Page 5 has an interesting article about Dr. Prem Shah and Bristol Court, a state of the art assisted living facility that caters to people with Alzheimer’s disease – that has an unusual asset in Dr. Shah and his involvement.
